He has thrown a tantrum once or twice this month because you didn’t get him his favourite ice-cream. You have been cleaning the house on your own, doing the dishes and bringing groceries in. I cannot stress more on how stressful it gets for women once they become a mother. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE motherhood but it requires you to stay active, healthy and basically not lose your mind! Many of us have been frustrated to the point where we cry alone by night time because it gets too much for us or we start bashing our husbands thinking they’re not helping us enough in raising our children. BUT to be honest, you are a super-woman and a super-mom and what you need is the following superfoods list, super foods for super moms to help you stay fit and healthy!

1. Turmeric

This phenomenal wonder root tops the superfoods list as it has numerous benefits for your body. It is used extensively in Asia and is also known as the golden spice. From anti-inflammatory properties to cancer protective attributes, this root has won big! An ingredient found in turmeric, curcumin is being researched to stop the growth of cancer cells. Naboneeta Sarkar and Susmita Bose have published in their new research how turmeric has bone building capacities and can help children and young patients with bone cancer. If you’re interested in their study, you can read more about it on NCBI. Here’s a list of the benefits of turmeric:

  • Antioxidant properties
  • Fights inflammation
  • Heals wounds quickly
  • Fights degenerative process in the brain and helps improve memory (oh mommy dearest, don’t we all need to have a good memory?)
  • Helps those with depression

Let me tell you about my personal experience with this miraculous spice. I’ve been a patient of chronic rhinitis. Nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, and a runny nose – a perfect package for draining your already dwindling energies. One of my friend’s family member suggested that I should try taking turmeric to manage my condition. Tired of taking anti-allergies, I tried turmeric and trust me it WORKED!

Every single day, I drank turmeric tea (very easy to make btw) and started seeing results in a couple of days. I don’t know how but it did it for me!

Quick recipe: Boil water in a pan, add a pinch of turmeric in it and let it rest for a couple of minutes. Maybe, 5 minutes. Let me warn you, it won’t taste that good but when did anything good for the body ever taste good anyway?

By the way, there are many other ways of consuming turmeric. You can check out different recipes here.

2. Beetroots

Nature has loaded beetroots with numerous vitamins and minerals along with the added benefit of it being extremely low in calories as well as in fat. One of the best reasons to add beets in your diet is that it helps keep blood pressure in check. In addition to that, like turmeric, beets have anti-inflammatory effects and interestingly, it also has anti-cancerous properties.

Beets help “wash your blood”. This means that they help your liver in detoxification and helps in reducing fatty deposits. Let’s agree on the fact that all of us succumb to junk food cravings and poor dietary habits. Beets are the superfood you need in your life to make sure your liver doesn’t hate you for making poor lifestyle choices.

Moreover, according to a research beetroot juice boosts up your stamina and can help you in reducing oxygen uptake during exercise. As a result, you can exercise for up to 16 percent longer! So, mommy dearest, please add beets to your diet and shed those extra pounds too!

These tiny little seeds come from the plant Salvia hispanica. Historically, the Aztecs and Mayans regarded it has one of the most important foods. In Mayan, “Chia” means “strength”. That’s all the more reason to look into this magical seed. Mommy dearest, you will be surprised to know that only an ounce of chia seeds contains a good amount of fiber, proteins, fat, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, vitamin B1, B2, B3, potassium, and zinc. It’s a complete package! No wonder it’s the perfect superfood for you.

The best part about chia seeds is that apart from its numerous nutrient content and energy boosting ingredients, it helps aid in losing weight. Studies have shown that with a healthy lifestyle and consumption of chia seeds, you can lose weight as they’re high in protein and fiber (both of which have been shown to help in weight loss).

Chia seeds are high in calcium, proteins, phosphorous and potassium. All of these are crucial for bone health. Mommies, going through pregnancies, operations and natural births do take a toll on us. It’s not that our bodies are weak but we do need to take care of them once we have gone through all of these. Needless to say, our bones need chia seeds!

That concludes the 3 super foods for super moms. Next time you go for grocery shopping remember to get these 3 superfoods for yourself. I will be sharing recipes on how to use them in an upcoming post. Till then, make sure you do your research about them and include them in your diet.
